Day before yesterday, I had to sit in police station for 4 hours ; there was a slim possibility of overnght stay. But nothing happened. IT WAS NOT POLITICAL HARASSMENT AT ALL!! no political head was behind it. . Basically, there was a minor fault of mine. I had rented flat to some Bipinbhai, and I had given copy of the contract to police station as needed. But contract had expired , same tenant stayed, same rent stayed and I didnt make and register new contract. . Now Bipinbhai was running genuine Paying Guest = PG business. And one of his PG lost mobile phone. So he went to file FIR so that he can claim insurance etc. So constable asked him for address, name of owner, name of main tenant etc and asked him to get copy of contract, and the proof that the contract was registered with police. I went with contract, the form etc, and it had expired over six months back. So technically, I was at fault. I went there at about 4pm day before yesterday i.e. monday. . Now, normal procedure is to ask owner to finish process in 3 days. But instead, I was told that there may be police case, and I will need bail or else I will be locked up under section abc and section def etc etc. I asked if "self bail" will be applicable. Generally, in all such minor violations, when person has no other case against him, self bail is valid. But person there said no to self bail. In fact, one person there even said that "this crime isnt bailable" !!! So I said "fine, I will ask friend of mine to come for bail". My friend said that he would come to the police station at 9pm. And I told them that my freind would come at 9pm with bail papers. Worst case --- I would have been in lock up for 1 day and then released next day. I was ready for that. . Finally, at 8pm, they asked me to go, and asked me to get all papers registered in 3 days !! . It was NOT a politically motivated case at all. But still, experience was worrying. What if I had not known internal guidelines. What if I had believed his word that "my offence wasnt bailable" !! . Long term solution is ---- Jury System, and that law-education should start in 8th class or whenever parents say. If parents say that "start law education in class-1" then it should start in class-1. This is proposal all SoMoKe-supporters, SoMoKe, CoBhAp have opposed. . Short term solution is : always keep property tax bill and its xerox copies ready with you all the time !! To give bail to your friend, you must have a property in your name, and you must have property tax bill with YOUR name on it and you need to have true xerox copy of it. And the property owner must come to bail the accuse. Many times, self bail is accepted. In such case too, xerox of property tax bill may be needed. .
